Magick

What Is This Magick Pagans Talk so Much About?

Merry Meet and welcome to my blog. This is my very first post on this subject, and as such, I feel like I should start at the very beginning… because when most people hear the word Witch they automatically think of the word Magick. If I had a penny for every time someone asked me to do a Spell for this or a Potion for that… Thank you Hollywood.

I think the best way of understanding what something is, is to first understand what something is not:

  1. Magick is not an isolated practice, most people will cast a Spell without learning the principles of the Craft, only to later realize the spell didn’t work properly.
  2. Magick is not exclusive to Pagan religions, lighting a candle to St Mary is a Spell. Any ritual that’s tied to a specific intention or wish is Magick.
  3. Magick is not a new thing, it’s possibly the oldest thing on Earth.
  4. Magick is not like instant noodles, it takes dedication to understand it, learn it and have it work with you.
  5. There are no “Green Witchcraft spells.” Green Witchcraft is a religion and we don’t have special spells that only Green Witches can do.
  6. Green Witchcraft teaches that we do NOT do spells to control the actions of others. We do NOT do “love spells” to “bring back your lover” and nonsense like that.
  7. We believe that everything we do will come come back to us threefold. In the case of the point above, if we cast a spell to bring someone specific to us, we are breaking that law, because we are stealing that person’s right to choose.
  8. Spells aren’t something you read in a book or get on line. Real witches NEVER use spell books or spell sites. If you can’t write your own working and explain it in energetically cohesive terms, you can’t, by definition, cast a spell.
  9. We write our OWN WORKINGS after obtaining the necessary skills. Getting a spell from a book or site and going through the motions is play acting, not spell craft.

Get it?

So what is Magick? We live in a time in which labels are everything. So I am happy to say that Magick is the thing that surrounds, transforms and purifies everything. Magick is what moves the tides, sways the tree branches and produces a cool breeze. Magick is everywhere because Magick is nothing more than energy. The very same energy all things are made of. Magick is just an old label stuck on an immortal form of power.

In the context of Nature Based Paganism, Magick is the process of tapping into the natural Creative Power of the Universe and channeling it to fulfill a chosen intention. Do you see? Magick is prayer taken to the next level – a level that can only be reached by those who are aware of the natural rhythms of the universe.

I didn’t start on this spiritual path solely because I wanted to cast Spells, so whenever I hear people saying that their Spells don’t work, I wonder if that’s the only thing they are doing! They should take a step back and ask themselves the following question: “Am I asking for more than what I am giving?”

Nature just wants to be acknowledged.

Have you ever greeted the Full Moon with a beautiful Esbat? Or learned what kind of tree provides that beautiful shade outside your house? It sounds a little too abstract to be thankful to something we can’t see, but if we put our phones away and turn the TV off for just five minutes, we’ll be able to see Magick everywhere: The bees buzzing, the juicy orange, the Sun, the Moon, the Stars!! Seriously If that’s not enough to convince a person that Magick is real, then honestly, nothing else will.

Welcome to blogging from someone with fewer posts than you 🙂 Something I find lacking among modern-day Pagans is an appreciation for magic in the mundane … too many come to Paganism with notions of Hollywood and special effects, and withdraw from Paganism in disappointment, not having realized that every moment, every event, and every thing they encounter is magical.

Best of luck with your blog – you picked up a new follower today, so I’ll be looking forward to reading more from you as your blog progresses 🙂
